Meet Dr. Andy Stafford: Your Newcastle cosmetic dentist

Our co-founder Dr. Andy Stafford graduated from Newcastle University Dental School in 2001 and established The Cosmetic Dental Clinic alongside his good friend Dr. Darren Cannell in 2006 after falling in love with the city.  

In 2014, Andy advanced in his field by earning a master’s degree with distinction in restorative and aesthetic dentistry from the University of Manchester. Committed to constantly refining his skills Andy has spent a great deal of time traveling extensively in North America, attending and completing scientific conferences in Vancouver, San Diego, New Orleans, Washington DC., Las Vegas and Chicago. He has attended hundreds of lectures and hands-on sessions with the world’s most prominent cosmetic dentists. He has also completed training with the University of Sheffield, Dr Paul Tipton, and the renowned Malo Clinic in Portugal.

We took a moment to chat with Andy and learn more about the man behind the craft:

Did you always want to be a dentist, or did you have other ideas of what you wanted to do when you were growing up?

“Surprisingly, dentistry wasn’t always the plan! As a child, I dreamed of becoming an architect, fascinated by design and structure. However, my passion for helping people and creating smiles eventually led me to this incredible profession.”

Why do you like working in the North East, and why did you decide to set up your business here?

“The North East is home it’s vibrant, welcoming, and full of character. There’s nothing quite like the warmth of the community here in Newcastle. Starting my business in this region felt natural; I wanted to give back to the area that’s given me so much.”

What is your favourite thing about working in dentistry?

“Transforming lives through smiles is the best part of my job. There’s no greater feeling than seeing a patient’s confidence grow after a treatment. It’s rewarding knowing that what we do can make such a positive difference.”

What is the most memorable experience you’ve had at the Cosmetic Dental Clinic?

“Every patient journey is special, but one that stands out was helping a particular patient who avoided smiling for years due to severe dental concerns. Witnessing their emotional reaction to their new smile was a powerful reminder of why I do what I do.”

What’s a fun fact about you that most patients wouldn’t know?

“Most people wouldn’t guess, but I’m a keen golfer, train CrossFit and enter Hyrox competitions! It’s my way of staying active and clearing my mind after a busy day at the clinic.”
