Same-Day Crowns in Newcastle: How Our On-Site CEREC Lab Saves You Time and Money

Picture this: You’ve just been told you need a dental crown. In the traditional scenario, you’re looking at multiple appointments spread over several weeks, uncomfortable temporary crowns that might fall off whilst eating, and multiple days off work. But what if you could walk into our Newcastle or Durham clinic in the morning and leave that afternoon with your permanent crown perfectly fitted? Welcome to the revolution of same-day CEREC crowns at The Cosmetic Dental Clinic.

As home to one of the most advanced on-site ceramics laboratories in the North East, we’ve transformed what was once a month-long ordeal into a single, efficient appointment. Dr Andy Stafford, our Clinical Director and a CEREC expert who lectures internationally on this technology, has perfected the art and science of same-day crowns, completing hundreds each year with precision that exceeds traditional methods.

The Traditional Crown Nightmare We’ve Eliminated

Let’s be honest about what getting a traditional crown actually involves—because once you understand the conventional process, you’ll appreciate why our patients are choosing CEREC technology.

The traditional crown journey typically unfolds like this:

Appointment 1: Your tooth is numbed, drilled down, and shaped. Then comes the dreaded impression—that tray of cold, gooey material that triggers gag reflexes and needs to set for several minutes. A temporary crown is fashioned from basic acrylic and cemented on. You leave with a list of foods to avoid and the hope that it stays put.

The Waiting Period: For 2-4 weeks, you navigate life with a temporary crown. These temporaries are notorious for falling off at the worst moments—during important meetings, romantic dinners, or whilst on holiday. They can’t handle sticky foods, hard foods, or sometimes even normal chewing. The temporary cement often leaks, causing sensitivity and allowing bacteria to enter.

Appointment 2: Assuming your permanent crown arrives from the external lab without issues (delays aren’t uncommon), you return for fitting. Sometimes it doesn’t fit properly, requiring additional adjustments or even a complete remake—meaning more temporaries and more waiting.

This traditional process means:

Your Same-Day Crown Experience: Hour by Hour

At The Cosmetic Dental Clinic, we’ve reimagined the entire crown process using our CEREC technology and on-site milling laboratory. Here’s how your single appointment unfolds:

9:00 AM – Arrival and Preparation You arrive at our Newcastle or Durham clinic, where Dr Stafford begins with a thorough examination and digital X-rays. Once you’re comfortably numbed (just once!), he precisely prepares your tooth using techniques refined through his Master’s degree research on CAD/CAM materials.

9:45 AM – Digital Scanning Gone are the messy impressions. Our state-of-the-art digital scanner captures your prepared tooth and surrounding teeth in perfect 3D detail within minutes. The scanner uses thousands of images per second to create a precise digital model—no gagging, no mess, no retakes.

10:00 AM – Crown Design This is where Dr Stafford’s expertise truly shines. Using sophisticated CEREC software, he designs your crown on-screen whilst you watch. Every curve, every contact point, every subtle anatomical feature is customised to match your natural teeth. His Master’s dissertation specifically focused on optimising these CAD/CAM designs for maximum longevity and aesthetics.

10:30 AM – Milling in Our On-Site Lab Your crown design is sent directly to our in-house milling unit, where a solid block of premium ceramic is precision-carved into your custom crown. This isn’t outsourced or sent away—it happens right here in our clinic. The milling process takes approximately 15-20 minutes, during which you can relax with refreshments or catch up on emails.

11:00 AM – Characterisation and Glazing Dr Stafford personally adds custom characterisation to match your natural tooth shade perfectly. The crown is then glazed and fired in our porcelain oven, achieving a natural lustre and incredible strength that rivals traditional lab-made crowns.

11:30 AM – Final Fitting Your permanent crown is tried in and checked for perfect fit and bite. Minor adjustments are made if needed (rare with digital precision), and the crown is permanently bonded to your tooth.

12:00 PM – Completion You leave with your permanent crown fully fitted—no temporaries, no return visits, no dietary restrictions. You can eat normally immediately and get on with your life.

The Technology Behind CEREC’s Precision

CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) represents three decades of continuous technological refinement, and our clinic has invested in the latest generation of this remarkable system.

The precision starts with our digital scanner, which captures your tooth’s geometry to within 19 microns—that’s less than half the width of a human hair. This accuracy surpasses traditional impressions, which can distort and lead to poorly fitting crowns.

Dr Stafford explains the advantage: “Traditional impressions can shrink or expand during transport to the lab. Stone models can chip or wear. Each step introduces potential error. With CEREC, we maintain digital precision from scan to design to milling—that’s why our crowns fit so perfectly on the first try.”

The ceramic blocks we use are manufactured under intense pressure, creating a material free from the microscopic flaws that can weaken traditional layered porcelain crowns. These blocks come in multiple translucencies and shades, allowing us to match your natural teeth precisely. The material strength actually exceeds that of natural enamel, yet remains kind to opposing teeth—unlike some traditional crown materials.

Our milling unit uses diamond burs spinning at 60,000 RPM with continuous water cooling, carving your crown from a solid ceramic block with micron-level precision. This eliminates the layers and potential weak points found in traditional built-up crowns.

The Real Cost Comparison: Time Is Money

When patients initially compare prices, traditional crowns might appear slightly cheaper. However, this fails to account for the true cost of the conventional process:

Hidden Costs of Traditional Crowns:

CEREC Crown Investment Includes:

When you calculate the total investment—including your time, convenience, and reduced risk of complications—CEREC crowns often prove more economical. Additionally, our flexible payment plans make this superior technology accessible to more patients.

Which Cases Qualify for Same-Day CEREC Treatment?

Our CEREC technology can address a wide range of dental situations in a single visit:

Ideal for CEREC:

Partial crowns and inlays: CEREC excels at conservative restorations, preserving more natural tooth structure than traditional crowns when full coverage isn’t necessary.

Multiple crowns: We can complete several crowns in a single extended appointment, transforming smiles in one day rather than multiple weeks.

May Require Traditional Approach:

Dr Stafford assesses each case individually, ensuring CEREC is the optimal solution for your specific needs. His extensive experience—backed by international lecturing on CEREC technology—means he can push the boundaries of what’s possible with same-day dentistry whilst maintaining exceptional quality standards.
