Mat graduated from Newcastle University Dental School with the John Proctor Prize, awarded in recognition of outstanding operative skill, in 2006. He has since completed, and continues to complete many hours of further education in the field of cosmetic dentistry, including years-long hands-on cosmetic dentistry courses with internationally-renowned Chris Orr and Paul Tipton—for which he received a Special Commendation award in recognition of his clinical skill.

Mat is a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, an organisation for dentists who are dedicated to the provision of excellent cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry.

In his spare time, Mat enjoys spending time with his young family, playing golf, and following his beloved NUFC.
